What a tragic and heartbreaking loss. Brijette Basden’s death is especially painful—she was so young, just 24, and had so much to offer as a teacher and former athlete. It’s difficult to imagine the shock her family, friends, and the entire community must be feeling right now. To be struck by a car while standing outside her own vehicle, trying to switch off driving duties, is an awful and senseless accident.
Brijette’s impact as a Kindergarten teacher, especially at Sallie B. Howard School, shows how much she meant to her students and the school community. As a Shaw University alum, she clearly had a bright energy, as the athletic department’s tribute mentioned, and that kind of spirit is something people don’t easily forget.
The fact that her sister, Asrael, was also injured in the crash adds another layer of pain to this tragedy. I’m glad that she survived, but no one should have to endure such a traumatic experience, let alone losing a sister in such a violent way.
It’s good to see that Shaw University and her school are honoring her memory and supporting her family during this incredibly difficult time. Do you think the community has been able to hold any memorials or support events for Brijette and her family?
