On December 10, 1941, just three days after the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor, the USS Arizona (BB-39) lay beneath the waters of Battleship Row—a stark and haunting reminder of the devastation that marked America’s entry into World War II.

Struck by multiple bombs during the surprise attack on December 7, one of which detonated her forward ammunition magazine, the USS Arizona suffered a catastrophic explosion that tore through the ship. In moments, she became a tomb for 1,177 sailors and Marines, most of whom remain entombed within her hull to this day.

The wreck of the Arizona remains in place as part of the USS Arizona Memorial, standing not only as a military grave but as a solemn symbol of sacrifice, resilience, and the cost of war. The ship’s oil continues to slowly seep from her remains—what some call the “black tears” of the Arizona—serving as a constant, quiet mourning.

🕊️ Let us remember their service, honor their sacrifice, and never forget the day that changed the course of history.
Fair winds and following seas to the fallen.
🇺🇸 “Remember Pearl Harbor.”
