Jaylen, who had autism and was non-verbal, was reported missing on Saturday after he was last seen at the Nature Center in Kinston. Multiple local, county, and state agencies collaborated in a search operation that lasted through the night, involving ground teams, drones, dive teams, and K-9 units.
Family members, community volunteers, and concerned citizens gathered in solidarity during the search, hoping for a different outcome. Sadly, Jaylen’s body was discovered in the Neuse River, confirming the community’s worst fears.
Local officials and advocacy groups have expressed condolences and are calling for enhanced safety measures and increased awareness around supporting individuals with special needs in public spaces.
In a statement, Jaylen’s family described him as a “joyful, loving soul who saw the world in a unique and beautiful way.” They also thanked the community and emergency responders for their tireless efforts.
Counseling services are being made available for students and residents coping with the tragedy. A candlelight vigil is being planned in Jaylen’s memory.
