Fifth Homicide of the Year in Saint Paul as Police Investigate Fatal Shooting at Homeless Encampment
SAINT PAUL, MN — A tragic scene unfolded Sunday afternoon when an adult male was found shot and killed at a homeless encampment near the 1200 block of Jackson Street, marking the fifth homicide of the year in the city.
Officers from the Saint Paul Police Department responded to a report of gunfire at approximately 1:15 p.m. Upon arrival, individuals at the encampment directed officers to a nearby tent where the victim was found suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Despite lifesaving efforts by first responders, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity, pending notification of next of kin. Investigators are working to piece together what led up to the shooting and are interviewing potential witnesses who were present in the area at the time.
“This is a heartbreaking tragedy,” said Sgt. Mike Ernster, spokesperson for the Saint Paul Police Department. “No matter the circumstances, every life lost to violence is one too many. Our detectives are doing everything they can to determine what happened and hold those responsible accountable.”
The area surrounding the encampment was cordoned off for several hours Sunday afternoon as forensic teams processed the scene. No arrests have been made, and police have not publicly identified any suspects.
The shooting underscores ongoing concerns about safety and conditions within and around unsheltered communities in Saint Paul. Advocates for the unhoused population say the violence highlights the urgent need for comprehensive housing solutions, mental health support, and access to resources.
