BURLINGTON, VT — A brutal assault near Burlington City Hall involving a group of juveniles has now become a homicide investigation, Vermont News First has confirmed.

The unidentified male victim, who was attacked on the afternoon of Monday, August 11, succumbed to his injuries over the weekend. Interim Police Chief Shawn Burke confirmed the death Monday afternoon, noting that the case remains an active investigation.

Burlington Police officers on foot patrol along Church Street witnessed the attack in progress and intervened. Three juveniles, believed to be between 14 and 16 years old, fled on foot and bicycle but were apprehended shortly after, according to Lt. Mike Henry.

One of the suspects reportedly brandished a firearm during the assault. All three are now facing proceedings in Vermont Family Court, though due to the state’s limited juvenile rehabilitation services, potential consequences remain minimal. Police indicated that additional arrests may be forthcoming.

The victim was transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center in critical condition and had shown signs of decline in recent days.

Chief Burke confirmed ongoing coordination with the Chittenden County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Burlington Police at (802) 658-2700.
