With profound sadness, the hip-hop community and the city of Fresno, California, mourn the unexpected passing of Derrick “Aesop” McElroy, known widely as Aesop Fables and Aesop the Black Wolf. Aesop, a founding member of the influential underground hip-hop collective Living Legends, died over the weekend of August 16–17, 2025.
Aesop’s innovative lyricism, distinctive voice, and dedication to authentic storytelling left an indelible mark on hip-hop culture. His artistry and vision helped shape a generation of artists and fans, inspiring countless individuals to embrace creativity and self-expression.
