Who:

  • Defendant: Teresa Youngblut, 21, of Seattle, WA

  • Victim: Border Patrol Agent David “Chris” Maland of Newport, VT

  • Co-defendant (deceased): Felix Bauckholt, 28, a German national

  • Gun purchaser: Michelle J. Zajko, 32, of Orleans, VT (charged separately)

What Happened:

  • On Jan. 20, Youngblut allegedly shot and killed Agent Maland during an immigration-related traffic stop on I-91 in Coventry, Vermont.

  • Youngblut reportedly exited a Toyota Prius without warning and opened fire, striking Maland fatally in the neck.

  • Another agent returned fire, wounded Youngblut, and fatally shot Bauckholt, who was allegedly reaching for his weapon.

  • Maland died at North Country Hospital at about 4 p.m.

New Legal Developments:

  • A federal grand jury returned a four-count indictment on Thursday, August 25.

  • U.S. Attorney Michael P. Drescher filed formal notice to seek the death penalty.

    • First time Youngblut is officially named as the shooter.

    • New charges include:

      • Murder of a federal officer with malice aforethought

      • Discharging a firearm during a crime of violence causing death

      • Assaulting two other Border Patrol Agents (initials J.M. and D.W.)

Additional Details:

  • Youngblut is allegedly tied to a radical cult group of computer scientists involved in veganism, gender identity, and artificial intelligence, linked to six killings in three states.

  • A Glock 23 .40-caliber pistol was used; casings were recovered at the scene.

  • Youngblut and Bauckholt were seen wearing tactical gear, and suspicious behavior was reported before the shooting.

  • Zajko, a friend of the pair, is accused of illegally purchasing firearms used in the shooting and is a person of interest in her parents’ 2022 double homicide in Maryland.

Federal and National Response:

  • Attorney General Pam Bondi and President Trump have cited this case as a justification to revive and expand federal use of the death penalty.

  • Multiple federal and local agencies, including the FBI, ATF, and Homeland Security, are involved in the investigation.
