BREAKING: Rifle Assault and Gunfire Near Burlington City Hall Under Investigation

BURLINGTON, VT — Police are investigating an aggravated assault involving a rifle and a gunshot during a large disturbance early Sunday near City Hall Park in downtown Burlington.

The incident occurred around 1:54 a.m. near St. Paul Street and College Street. Responding officers found one person with a head injury. The victim, whose identity has not been released, was treated at UVM Medical Center and later discharged.

According to Detective Lt. Mike Beliveau, an individual pulled what appeared to be a rifle from his pants, struck the victim in the head with the butt of the weapon, and fired one round into the air. The injury resulted from the blunt-force impact, not the gunshot.

The suspect and other individuals fled the scene. One vehicle led law enforcement on a high-speed pursuit, which was called off due to safety concerns.

Ballistic evidence was recovered, and Burlington detectives continue to gather information.
