BREAKING: Pedestrian Killed in Colchester Crash Identified as Michael Pickering, 52

COLCHESTER, VT — The pedestrian fatally struck on Malletts Bay Avenue Saturday night has been identified as Michael Pickering, 52, of Colchester, police confirmed Monday.
The vehicle involved was driven by a 16-year-old, whose name has not been released. Due to his age, the teen is unlikely to face charges in adult court, as Vermont law allows most drivers under 19 to be processed through confidential Family Court.
The collision occurred around 8:52 p.m. near Young Street, just past the Winooski town line. First responders arrived to find bystanders attempting life-saving efforts, but Pickering was pronounced dead at the scene by Colchester Rescue.
Police said Pickering was wearing dark clothing and walking northbound when he was hit by a northbound vehicle.
The investigation is ongoing, and police have not yet released details on potential contributing factors such as speed, lighting, or impairment.
Critics of Vermont’s juvenile justice system have raised concerns about the limited accountability and lack of resources, including the absence of juvenile detention facilities, even in fatal incidents involving teen drivers.
Colchester Police are leading the investigation, with assistance from Colchester Rescue and Fire, along with officers from Winooski, Essex, and Williston.
Anyone with information is urged to call Colchester Police at (802) 264-5555.
