A Georgia man will spend the rest of his life in prison after being found guilty of shooting two teenage sisters, killing one and seriously injuring the other.

On November 7, 2025, DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston announced that 23-year-old Malachi Coleman was convicted on multiple charges, including malice murder, felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

The shooting occurred on January 2, 2023, on Arbor Ridge Drive in Stone Mountain. Police found 19-year-old Jayce Pirtle dead from a gunshot wound to the head, while her 16-year-old sister survived despite serious injuries.

Investigators said the sisters were walking home when a man dressed in black confronted them. The surviving sister identified the shooter as Coleman, someone they knew. Security camera footage corroborated her account, showing Coleman chasing the sisters and shooting the younger first, then following Jayce. Audio captured Jayce’s desperate pleas: “Malachi, stop, please… please, Malachi, no!” — followed by gunshots.

Prosecutors said Coleman had been dating a friend of the victims and became enraged after an argument, reportedly upset that his girlfriend spent New Year’s Eve with the sisters and their family instead of him.

Following the jury’s verdict, Judge Yolanda Parker-Smith sentenced Coleman to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
