In Memoriam: Battalion Chiefs Frank Harwood and John Morrison

Our hearts are heavy with grief as we extend our deepest condolences to the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department, Kootenai County Fire and Rescue, and the entire firefighting community following the tragic deaths of Battalion Chief Frank Harwood and Battalion Chief John Morrison.

The two brave leaders were killed in an ambush while responding to a wildfire — a selfless act of service that ended in unimaginable tragedy. Their loss is a sobering reminder of the risks our first responders face every day to protect our communities, often in the most dangerous and unpredictable circumstances.

We also lift up Engineer David Tysdal, who was critically injured in the attack. He remains hospitalized, surrounded by family, friends, and his fire department family. Our prayers are with him for strength, healing, and full recovery.

The Florence Fire and Medical Department joins fire departments across the nation in standing shoulder to shoulder with our brothers and sisters in Idaho during this incredibly difficult time. The legacy of Battalion Chiefs Harwood and Morrison will live on through the lives they touched, the firefighters they mentored, and the communities they so courageously served.

May their sacrifice never be forgotten, and may their families, colleagues, and loved ones find peace and comfort in the love and support surrounding them.

Rest easy, Chiefs Harwood and Morrison. We will carry the torch from here. 🔥🕊️💔
