Fatal Shooting on Downtown Square Leaves One Dead – Police Investigation Underway
Denton, TX – August 9, 2025
A fatal shooting occurred Saturday afternoon on the Denton Downtown Square, leaving one man dead and prompting an ongoing police investigation.
The incident happened around 12:10 p.m. in the 200 block of West Hickory Street, a central area popular with local businesses and pedestrians. According to Denton Police, the shooting followed a confrontation between a male patron and a man experiencing homelessness.
Responding officers found the victim critically injured. He was transported to a nearby hospital, but died despite life-saving efforts. Authorities have not yet released his identity.
The individual involved in the shooting remained at the scene and was detained by police. As of Sunday, no charges have been filed, and investigators are continuing to interview witnesses and review evidence.
Police have not confirmed whether the firearm used was legally possessed or if the incident may lead to any criminal charges.
“We are working to determine the full circumstances that led to this tragic outcome,” said Denton Police in a brief statement. “We ask for the public’s patience as the investigation continues.”
