Gates Police Chief Robert Long stated during a press conference that the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident and possibly targeted. Investigators are working to determine the motive and identify the suspect, who fled the scene before officers arrived. Surveillance footage from inside the distribution center is being reviewed, and witnesses are being interviewed.

The facility was placed on immediate lockdown following the shooting, with employees sheltered in place until authorities secured the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Smith was described by coworkers as a dedicated employee and a kind, hardworking individual. His death has sent shockwaves through the community and among fellow employees at the distribution center.

Wegmans issued a statement Saturday evening expressing deep condolences to Smith’s family and confirming full cooperation with law enforcement during the investigation. The company also announced that grief counseling and support services would be made available to staff.

Police are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers or by contacting the Gates Police Department directly.
