At approximately 10:17 p.m., GSP officers conducted a routine road check on Georgia Highway 36 near Stone Mountain Street in Covington. During this checkpoint, a gray Ford Fusion was stopped, and the driver, later identified as a 15-year-old male, was instructed to pull into a nearby parking lot for further inspection. Instead of complying, the driver accelerated and fled the scene, prompting a pursuit by GSP officers. The chase continued onto Highway 81, where, just south of Flat Shoals Road, the driver lost control while attempting to pass another vehicle and collided with a utility pole. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
