Yourhansay Gonzales-Washington, 18, along with Shawn Roland, 18, and Rayquan Bass, 18, has been arrested and accused in the shooting death of Sevyn Bellar-White, a Millard North senior, at a Halloween party.

Just months earlier, in August, Gonzales-Washington was sentenced to 18 months of probation for terroristic threats involving a firearm in Sarpy County.
And now we are left to ask: If he had been held accountable for the violent offenses he committed earlier this year, would Sevyn still be alive?

This should never become just another Omaha headline.
Parents are exhausted. Families are scared. Our community deserves better.

We need laws that actually protect our children and our neighborhoods — and we need a city that truly supports the officers who are on the streets every day trying to keep us safe. Not lip service. Real action.
