An 89-year-old woman has been charged after allegedly striking a 10-year-old girl with her car in a Cudahy crosswalk and then continuing to drive away from the scene, according to a criminal complaint.

The victim, Lenci Lambert, was crossing at a marked crosswalk around 8 a.m. Tuesday on her way to school when a silver sedan sped through the intersection “without slowing down” and hit her. Lambert suffered a concussion in the collision.

Police were able to locate the vehicle quickly after a nearby hospital captured it on security cameras. Investigators noted the car had fresh front-end damage, a cracked windshield, and what appeared to be a handprint on the glass.

Authorities identified the driver as Darlene Adam, 89, who reportedly told investigators she believed a rock had struck her car or that she may have hit a construction barrel. Adam said she did not notice any damage until she arrived at the hospital and did not recall seeing a crossing guard at the intersection.
