This is a really tragic and disturbing case. The fact that Daniel Waterman was able to wake up from his coma and accuse his girlfriend of intentionally causing the crash is chilling. His injuries were severe—breaking his neck, back, collarbone, hips, leg, and ankle—and yet, he still managed to speak out about what happened. That alone gives his statement a lot of weight, especially given the severity of his trauma and the fact that he didn’t survive.
The details of what Waterman allegedly said to investigators—especially the chilling remark from Mumby, “I don’t care what happens. You’ll get what you deserve”—suggests a deep level of anger and premeditation, if the accusation is true. To be in a relationship and have something so violent unfold like that must be horrifying for everyone involved, including their families. What makes it even more heartbreaking is the fact that they were expecting a child, which would have been a source of joy, not tragedy.
Mumby’s criminal history and her initial charges, including reckless driving and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, show that authorities were already aware of the gravity of the situation before the charges were upgraded to vehicular homicide. It seems that investigators took the claim very seriously, and it seems like the family is looking for justice, which is understandable given the circumstances.
Mumby’s not guilty plea will likely drag this case out further. It’ll be interesting to see how the case unfolds in court, especially with Waterman’s statements providing such crucial evidence. The legal process will hopefully bring clarity, but no matter what, the emotional toll on the families involved is going to be huge.
