A Kissimmee family is mourning the devastating loss of 7-year-old Austin Cerda Rodriguez, a bright, curious, and deeply loved child with autism, who tragically drowned after leaving his home around 10 PM and entering the pond behind the house on October 21st.
Austin’s passing has shattered the hearts of his parents, extended family, and everyone who knew him. His father, Cesar Avila, who has cared for Austin since infancy, and his wife Michelle Rodriguez are now navigating unimaginable grief, seeking comfort and meaning amid profound loss.
Austin’s death highlights a heartbreaking reality for many families of children with autism: children with autism are 160 times more likely to die from drowning than their neurotypical peers. In Florida, a state abundant with lakes, ponds, and backyard pools, drowning remains one of the leading causes of death among children with autism, according to the Autism Society of Florida.
In Austin’s memory, and to support his family during this painful time, a Meal Train has been created to help provide them with meals and lighten their burden. Those who wish to contribute a meal or donation can visit: Meal Train for Austin.
Every donation, message of support, and act of kindness helps lift Austin’s parents and ensures that his light continues to guide and inspire others. 💛
