17-Year-Old Suffers Life-Threatening Injuries in Accidental Shooting in Beloit

Beloit, Wis. – A 17-year-old is fighting for their life after being shot in what authorities are calling an accidental incident late Wednesday night in Beloit. The City of Beloit Police Department confirmed the details of the incident in a public update issued on Friday.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 11:05 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, in the 1700 block of Park Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered the 17-year-old victim with serious, life-threatening injuries caused by a gunshot wound. Emergency medical services were immediately rendered on the scene before the teen was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

According to the statement released by the police department, the shooting occurred under circumstances currently believed to be accidental. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the gun was discharged by a 15-year-old. Authorities have not disclosed the identities of either teen due to their ages and the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation.

“No one is in custody at this time,” the police department stated. “All parties involved are cooperating with the investigation.”

Law enforcement officials are continuing to piece together the events leading up to the shooting. While few specifics have been released, investigators are expected to examine how the firearm was obtained, whether it was legally owned, and the circumstances in which it came into the hands of the teenagers.

The Beloit Police Department has not yet indicated whether any charges may be filed. As of Friday, the focus remains on supporting the injured teen and continuing the investigation to determine the full context of the shooting.

“We urge the community to allow the process to unfold,” a department spokesperson said. “Our officers are working closely with all parties involved and their families to understand exactly what happened.”

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising concerns once again about gun safety, particularly when minors are involved. Local advocates have renewed calls for education on firearm safety and better storage practices to prevent tragedies like this one.

“It’s heartbreaking whenever a young person is involved in a shooting, whether intentional or not,” said local resident Maria Jensen, a community youth advocate. “We must take every step necessary to ensure firearms are kept secure and out of the reach of children.”

Authorities are urging anyone with information relevant to the case to come forward. Meanwhile, support services are being offered to both the victim’s family and the 15-year-old involved in the incident.

As of Friday evening, the 17-year-old remains in critical condition. No further updates on their medical status have been released at this time.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
