14-Year-Old Killed in UNM Campus Shooting; 18-Year-Old Suspect in Custody
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – July 25, 2025 — A tragic shooting in the early hours of Friday morning has claimed the life of 14-year-old Michael Lamotte on the University of New Mexico (UNM) campus, prompting an extensive investigation led by the New Mexico State Police (NMSP).
The incident occurred at Mesa Vista Hall, a building on the UNM campus in Albuquerque, shortly after midnight. Responding officers found Lamotte critically injured; he was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have arrested an 18-year-old suspect, whose identity has not yet been released. The individual is facing multiple serious charges, including homicide, as the investigation continues to unfold.
The circumstances surrounding how a minor came to be on the university campus during the incident are still under active investigation. Both UNM Police and NMSP are working together to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
